This summer, my family and I visited the beautiful town of Cascais, Portugal, located just 30 minutes from Lisbon. It was an incredible experience for many reasons, but one personal milestone stands out: I finally mustered the courage to bring my camera along. For years, I had been too anxious about theft while traveling, but this time, I didn’t let fear hold me back. And I’m so glad I didn’t! Cascais, a picturesque coastal town just 30 minutes from Lisbon, is a perfect destination for families looking for a mix of beach relaxation, fun activities, and delicious food. This guide will help you make the most of your family vacation in Cascais, including tips on where to eat, what to do, and how to navigate the town without stress.
Beaches in Cascais for Families
Cascais is known for its beautiful beaches, but there’s one thing you should know: the water is cold! If your family loves swimming in warm seas, this might be a surprise. However, the stunning beaches more than make up for it with their clean sands, calm waters, and plenty of space to relax.
Best Beaches for Families:
Praia da Conceição: A great spot for families, with shallow waters and lifeguards on duty. The beach is also close to the town center, so it’s easy to find food and amenities.
Praia da Ribeira: Another family-friendly option, offering calm waters and plenty of space for kids to play.
Even though the water is chilly, our kids loved splashing around while my husband and I enjoyed the views. With fewer waves in this part of Cascais, it’s also a safe option for younger children who want to play in the water.
Festas do Mar – A Unique Family Experience
If you're visiting in August, don't miss Festas do Mar, Cascais' annual music festival. Held right by the beach, this free festival features live performances from local and international artists. Initially, I was worried the noise might disrupt our evenings, but it turned out to be a fantastic experience. The festival created a vibrant atmosphere without being overwhelming, and it gave us something fun to do after our beach days.
Getting Around: No Car Needed!
One of the best things about Cascais is how easy it is to explore without renting a car. The town itself is walkable, and if you want to visit Lisbon, the train is affordable and convenient.
Train to Lisbon: Just €2.70 each way, and kids under 5 travel for free. The journey takes about 30 minutes, making day trips to Lisbon a breeze.
Local transportation: If you need to travel further within Cascais, local buses are available, but we found walking and the train were more than enough for our needs.
Family-Friendly Dining in Cascais
Cascais offers a wide variety of dining options, perfect for families with picky eaters or those looking for something new. Here are a few of our favorite spots that cater well to both adults and children:
For Seafood Lovers:
Bubbles and Bites is in the heart of Cascais and offers some of the freshest fish you’ll find. It’s a family-friendly restaurant with a laid-back vibe.
Best Burgers in Town:
Sacas at the marina became our favorite spot for burgers. We loved it so much, we went back three times! The portions are generous, and the atmosphere is casual, making it ideal for families.
Sushi:
For sushi fans, LovIt is a great option. It’s a bit of a walk from the town center, but well worth the effort for delicious, fresh sushi.
If you prefer to cook your meals, you can do your grocery shopping at the massive Auchan shopping center. It has everything from fresh fruits to seafood, so you’ll have plenty of options for family meals at home or your holiday rental.
Museums and Parks – Fun for All Ages
One of Cascais’ highlights for families is its variety of activities that are both educational and fun.
Museums: If you're planning to explore the local museums, here’s a tip—many of them are free on the first Sunday of every month! Even on regular days, museum admission fees are very affordable. Don’t miss the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães, a fascinating spot that offers a glimpse into Cascais' history and culture.
Marechal Carmona Park: This park is perfect for families with younger kids. It has a playground, picnic areas, and even turtles and ducks roaming freely. Our children loved exploring the park and playing in the playground, while my husband and I appreciated the peaceful surroundings.
Additional Tips for Families
Bring Layers: The coastal weather can change quickly, especially in the evenings. Make sure to pack light jackets or sweaters for everyone.
Plan for Beach Time: Even if the water is cold, your kids might still want to play in the sand or shallow areas. Bring beach toys, sun protection, and perhaps even a wetsuit if they’re eager to swim.
Day Trips: Consider taking a short trip to nearby Sintra, a magical town filled with castles and palaces. It’s an easy train ride from Cascais and well worth the visit for kids and adults alike.
Final Thoughts: Cascais as a Family Destination
Cascais is a wonderful family destination, offering a great mix of relaxation, culture, and fun. From the spacious beaches to the vibrant town life, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy. Whether your kids are building sandcastles or you're snapping pictures of the gorgeous landscape, this coastal town is sure to provide memorable experiences for the whole family.
